About This Spot

Stepping into Black Rock Cafe in the heart of Pāhoa feels like settling into a cherished neighborhood retreat where time slows down just enough for you to truly unwind. The space is warmly inviting, with a rhythm that gently balances the quiet hum of friendly conversation and the comforting clinks from the kitchen and bar areas. It’s a place where both locals and visitors seem to find a moment of easy connection, whether seated at the bar or tucked away in the cozy dining area.

The atmosphere here is subtly layered—part casual American diner, part island gathering spot—resulting in a vibe that’s unpretentious yet thoughtfully crafted. As daylight filters softly through the windows, the back area takes on a gentle, dimmer glow, inviting quietly intimate meals or relaxed evening drinks. There’s a sense of welcome that lingers, carried by the warmth of attentive, good-humored service.

Food at Black Rock Cafe feels like a reflection of the island itself: diverse, hearty, and full of surprises. Morning offerings often arrive with generous portions and homey comforts—the kind of breakfast that proves local staples like eggs benedict or fluffy pancakes can carry both satisfaction and a subtle joy. For later in the day, the menu stretches beyond the expected, blending classic American favorites with unique island twists. Here, a burger or sandwich doesn’t just fill you up; it connects you to a community that savors its flavors with a quiet pride and a nod to local tradition.

What makes Black Rock Cafe stand out isn’t just the food, but the way moments unfold over each dish—friends laughing over shared plates, travelers finding a familiar taste far from home, or someone enjoying a peaceful solo dinner at the bar with a perfectly prepared fish entrée. It’s this human thread, the everyday stories woven into meals and memories, that roots the cafe deeply in Pāhoa’s local landscape.

Ate here a few times while in the island. We only got breakfast here but it looks like they have lunch and dinner options too. The food is also a great price if you are on a budget or not looking to spend 40-50 dollars each meal. You can get a solid breakfast for 20-25 bucks. The eggs benedict are a great option. The potatoes that come with it are very good too. I also tried the pancake and it was huge, and about an inch thick. You could probably feed two to three people with it, no kidding. It was good, but I found it had an interesting flavor that I wasn’t a big fan of. 10/10 recommend the eggs benedict, 4/10 kinda recommend the pancake. Overall this is a nice place to grab food. I would most certainly stop in if you are in the area.

Such a great little cafe! Excellent customer service everyone was so sweet, kind and helpful. The food was so delicious we had to go back a second time. I loved the Ono fish sandwich It was a nice atmosphere just a little bit dark in the back, that's the only reason why I gave it four stars but overall it was five stars

Perfect vacation breakfast. Pancakes are as big as the plate. And tastes better than IHOP. You can get two of the pancakes with two strips of bacon for $10.95. Quaint little restaurant, I would recommend it to any age group. Even children love it here. Hats off to the chef and wait staff. We'll done.

I had a relaxing dinner by myself here. The bar is a separate area from the restaurant. The fish I had was exquisitely made— far beyond any "basic ordinary American" kitchen work. My compliments to the chefs, because the fish had this buttery garnish and scattering of vegetables on it (tomatoes, mushrooms, pease) that was stellar. I couldn't even finish it all. I thought the food and drink were a bit pricey, but I was happy to see portion size was large.

OMG!! The burgers and onion rings are sooo good here!! We stopped in because we seen a review. We definitely were not disappointed!!! We returned a few days later and enjoyed our meals again before we left the area. Highly recommend stopping in for lunch or dinner. The breakfast looked amazing, I seen the biggest pancake being served, however we didn't try breakfast we were there for lunch at 11am and just seen some of the breakfasts that others gad ordered.

Excellent service, and definitely excellent food! Food was perfectly done. If we end up this direction again on our trip we will definitely come back another time. Would recommend.
